The most anticipated game for the Xbox One won't be landing this year.
On Friday, Microsoft announced that Halo 5: Guardians, the next installment in the epic sci-fi shooter series, will launch in late 2015.
The date will give developer 343 Industries extra time to optimize the series for the Xbox One, but it could disappoint fans who were expecting Halo 5 to drop this holiday season after Microsoft showed a teaser trailer for the game at last year's E3.
"In the past, Halo games have pushed the Xbox forward, showcasing the console and its ecosystem in entertaining and innovative ways," noted 343 General Manager Bonnie Ross in a blog post on Microsoft's Xbox Wire. "Making a Halo game that runs at 60 frames per second, on dedicated servers, with the scope, features and scale we’ve been dreaming of for more than a decade, is non-trivial. It’s a task that we, at 343 Industries, are taking very seriously to ensure we deliver the Halo game that fans deserve, and a game that is built from the ground up for Xbox One."
Ross noted that Halo 5 will be a significantly bigger effort than Halo 4, with the team retooling its technology to create a game they consider truly next generation.
2015 is shaping up to be a big year for Halo fans. In addition to Halo 5: Guardians, Ross said the Steven Spielberg Halo TV series will launch that fall as well. That series will stand apart from the games, she noted, though they’re both set in the same universe.
Microsoft also recently revealed information about yet another Halo project, this one a digital series produced by famed sci-fi director Ridley Scott. The company hasn’t indicated when -- or how -- that’s coming
Fans feeling let down may still get some good Halo-related news at E3 this year. At last year's E3, Ross promised fans that “in 2014, Halo combat will truly evolve and your journey with Halo on Xbox One begins" -- and she said she hasn't forgotten that promise.
"Many fans noted that I was very deliberate with my phrasing on stage at E3 last year," she said. "I spoke about a 'journey,' rather than a destination – and that journey definitely begins in 2014 with a giant leap, rather than one small step. We’ll give you much more information about our plans for this year at the Xbox E3 2014 Media Briefing on June 9, and we’re confident that Halo fans will be pretty excited about the special plans we have in store."
