FIVE ANIME TO LOOK FORWARD TO: SPRING 2013
February 25, 2013 · by Mrs Blunder · in Anime, Opinion
So, the five anime I chose for Winter were a bit iffy. I dropped Inaba, Sasami-San, and Amnesia fairly quickly (though I might eventually try the latter again). I haven’t had time really to keep up with Hakkenden and Maoyu, but my sister has made sure I stay on top of Vividred Operation whilst I’ve also been sure to keep up with the latest episodes of Shin Sekai Yori (at the cost of falling behind on Zetsuen no Tempest). Personally, I blame my newly re-kindled obsession with Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. All that aside, I’ve started peeking at the chart for Spring 2013, and here’s the five I plan to keep an eye on this time
5. Karneval
Producer: Manglobe | Genre: action, fantasy, mystery, sci-fi, shoujo
While the brief “synopsis” available on MAL doesn’t exactly divulge a lot, I’m fairly certain you can guess why this anime made it to my list: bishounen. Well, that and the fact that what I can make of the poorly written synopsis is fairly intriguing. Mysterious bracelets, hot boys, criminals, bishies, defense organizations called circuses, and did I mention hot boys? What more can a fangirl like me ask for?
Supposedly, Karneval, which is sometimes stylized as K?RNEVAL, tells the tale of Nai, a boy trying to find someone (big surprise, right?), and Gareki, your everyday, run-of-the-mill thief, who meet at a mansion and are then framed for a crime they, obviously, didn’t commit. The anime is an adaptation of the manga of the same name, which was published in 2007. (Also, on its Blu-ray release in May, it’ll have English subtitles!)
4. Date a Live
Producer: AIC Plus+, Nippon Columbia | Genre: mecha, romance, school, sci-fi, shounen
Okay, I’m really not a fan of harem anime – unless there’s lots of skin. (Again with those boyish aspects of mine.) While the preview shows us some pantsu, it’s not enough to sell me on its own. However, that rabbit thing is enough to at least pique my curiosity. I guess it won’t hurt to have a little bit of romantic shounen on my plate this season — lets just hope it doesn’t disappoint me. I’m extremely picky when it comes to shounen.
As for the plot, apparently the town is destroyed in some explosion that leaves behind this fairly attractive girl in purple armor. This girl is apparently some sort of disastrous Spirit thingie, and the main character, Shido, is directed by his sister-in-law to date her, in order to save the world. Perhaps not the most intricate of lots, but like I said: that giant rabbit thing. Definitely interested in seeing that, at least.
3. Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru
Producer: Brains Base | Genre: comedy, romance, school
Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find a preview for this one, but a brief look at the overview –and the fact I absolutely adored Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun — are enough to sell me Yahari. According to the synopsis, the series follows Hachiman, a problem child who has no goals for his future. When he’s forced to take part in a public service club, he meets the school’s prettiest girl. Here’s to hoping for another romantic success from Brains Base!
2. Devil Survivor 2
Producer: Bridge, Atlus | Genre: demons, supernatural
Based on the game, Devil Survivor 2 centers around a student who is foretold of death via e-mail. A fairly simple plot, and definitely an interesting one. Unfortunately, I’ve never played the game, and there doesn’t seem to be too much detail about the anime outside of the preview, but hey! it looks interesting. Good enough for me.
1. Shingeki no Kyojin
Producer: Wit Studio, Production I.G. | Genre: action, drama, fantasy, super power, tragedy
I honestly considered trolling you all and saying the Japanese dub of My Little Pony is my top choice for the Spring season, but then I felt a modicum of guilt and opted not to. That leaves us with my number one anime to look forward to this spring: Shingeki no Kyojin, or Attack of Titans. If the preview isn’t enough to pique your interest, then check this out:
The world is a dystopia. Humans are near extinction, thanks to the giants that have begun to over run the world. The remaining civilization is forced to build high walls to protect their cities, but that doesn’t stop a super giant from appearing out of nowhere and devastating their world (and eating the main characters’, Elen and Mikasa, mother – nom nom nom!). Complete with gory bits of muscle and sinew, gobbling of humans, and obvious action in the preview, Shingeki no Kyojin has earned its place on my must-see for the Spring. //insert fanboy squeal.
